Are you looking for the best place to live on Alabama's Eastern Shore? We're Tony and Jess, REALTORS® with Your Real Estate Fam, and we've lived in Daphne ourselves. From experience, we can tell you it's one of our favorite cities in all of Alabama: highly rated schools, plenty of places to shop, eat, and hang out, and some of the nicest and most affordable homes on the Eastern Shore.
In this guide we'll walk you through Olde Towne Daphne, our favorite park on the bay, the commute to Mobile, the kinds of neighborhoods you'll find, and how Daphne fits with everything around it. Watch the video below, then keep reading.
Moving to Fairhope, Alabama: everything you need to know, from Tony & Jess.
Daphne also gets national attention: Niche.com has ranked it the best place to buy a house in Alabama.
One of the biggest reasons people choose Daphne is that you can stretch your dollar pretty far here compared to other parts of the Eastern Shore. That doesn't mean you're giving anything up. You'll find brand-new construction in beautiful new subdivisions, older homes that need some work where you can get a really good deal, modest condos within walking distance of the bay, and million-dollar homes on the bay with water and beach access.
You can also find neighborhoods with or without an HOA or POA, so if you'd rather not pay monthly or annual dues, we can help you find that.
Daphne has all kinds of neighborhoods. Many offer amenities like pools, basketball and tennis courts, and fitness centers. You can also live on acreage with room for horses in an equestrian property, which is something we get asked about a lot.
A few neighborhoods we mention often:
A lot of the people who call us need to commute across the bay for work, and Daphne makes that easy. Depending on where you live, you're looking at about a 20 to 35 minute drive to Mobile. When we lived in Lake Forest, the drive to Mobile Infirmary took just under 20 minutes as long as there was no traffic on I-10.
The University of South Alabama and Infirmary Health in Mobile are two of the area's largest employers, and they're about 15 to 20 minutes apart. Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, another big employer, is just a stone's throw from Daphne.
If you have questions about your commute or your employer, reach out and we'll be happy to help.
Daphne has a humid subtropical climate: hot, humid summers and mild winters, with the breeze off Mobile Bay. The day we filmed in February, it was 71° at Centennial Park. Like the rest of the Gulf Coast, Daphne sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season (June through November), so flood-zone status and homeowners insurance are worth checking on any home before you buy, especially bayfront.
Most of Daphne's shopping and restaurants are outside quiet Olde Towne, and that part of town is busy and growing. The main way to Mobile is I-10 across the bay, and your commute depends a lot on traffic there.
From Daphne, the Gulf Shores beaches and Pensacola Beach in Florida are each about an hour's drive.
Daphne is served by Baldwin County Public Schools, and its schools are well rated. There are also private school options nearby, such as Bayside Academy. Assigned schools depend on the address, so check the Baldwin County Public Schools website for zoning, and see GreatSchools for ratings.
Daphne is home to roughly 30,000 people and is growing every day.
Moving to a new town is a big decision, and we've made plenty of moves ourselves. If you'd like to come see Daphne for yourself, we'd love to help.
